Among the five lakes located along the Coulee Corridor, Soap Lake is distinguished by having the highest concentration of minerals. The lake features a top layer composed of approximately 81 feet of mineral-rich water, while the underlying layer consists of a sediment-like substance characterized by a more intense mineral composition, containing unique compounds and microscopic organisms. Notably, these two layers have remained unblended for thousands of years. In scientific terminology, lakes that exhibit this uncommon phenomenon are classified as meromictic. With only 11 such lakes identified in the United States, Soap Lake stands out as the most extreme example of this classification.
